The answer is yes. When you are not flossing properly or regularly, your dentist can tell.

Did you know that studies have shown that only about 10% of Americans floss their teeth daily? Are you guilty of this? Maybe you floss from time to time, but just not enough? You are in the majority, but you can change that – it’s time to tip the scale the other way!
If you aren’t flossing, you’re missing about 40% of each tooth. As you may have guessed, this is problematic.


Here are just some of the problems this can cause:

1. Bad Breath
You guessed it – if you aren’t cleaning your teeth properly, there is a good chance there will be an odor. It’s probably the most minor of the problems, but still quite undesirable.

2. Plaque + Tarter Buildup
Your toothbrush really does go a long way in keeping your mouth healthy, but it simply cannot reach the tight spaces that floss can. Flossing is the only way to remove the plaque, bacteria, and food residue in between the teeth. Going too long without flossing can allow plaque to form and harden into tarter. Then, you will need a dentist to remove it with specialty tools.

3. Cavities
If plaque and tarter form and are not removed, the next thing to happen is the development of cavities. Cavities between the teeth can be filled, but why would you want to risk having to do that, when you just need to floss?

4. Periodontitis and Gingivitis
Not only can teeth be damaged by not flossing, but the gums are also affected. You may develop gingivitis, which is a condition where the gums become inflamed, red, and sore. If this is allowed to go on without treatment, it can turn into a more advanced gum disease called periodontitis which can be very painful as bacteria deteriorate your gums and even the bone that holds your teeth in place.

5. Tooth Loss
If cavities and gum disease become severe enough, teeth could begin to fall out or need to be extracted.

Flossing daily allows for a healthier oral environment and can do wonders in preventing the problems we discussed. A healthier oral environment is also a great thing for the rest of your body. If you have oral health problems, they can also lead to infections which could spread throughout your body and even increase your risk of heart disease.

So, how about it? Ready to start flossing? Even if you have never flossed before, it’s not too late to start. A word of warning, if you don’t floss regularly, when you start, your gum could bleed a bit. This is perfectly normal and will stop in time with regular, consistent flossing. Don’t let it discourage you. If this bleeding is bothersome or your gums are feeling sore, a rinse of warm water mixed with a little salt can help soothe the discomfort.
