Hands down, it’s tooth decay. Or, in other words, cavities. In fact, they are so common that on average, American adults have 3 fillings each.

If you are experiencing pain when you eat or drink hot or cold things, there is a good chance you have a cavity. Other times, you may not even notice a cavity and it is discovered when you come in for a routine check-up.

Unfortunately, teeth cannot repair themselves. So, if you do end up with a cavity, it is important to get it treated. If you don’t, it could lead to tooth loss and/or infection. The treatment for cavities is fairly simple and painless as we have several methods we use to keep you relaxed and comfortable. We remove the cavity, clean the tooth, and fill in the negative tooth left behind.

So, what causes cavities anyway, and how I can I prevent myself or my family member from getting another one?

Some teeth are predisposed to cavities due to deep grooves, especially molars. In these cases, we may recommend a dental sealant to help prevent cavities.

Ultimately, cavities are caused when plaque builds up on the surface of the tooth. The plaque turns sugars into acids which then eat away at your tooth’s enamel leading to holes in the tooth. Good oral hygiene is the most important step in preventing tooth decay. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss between them at least once a day. This is crucial in preventing plaque build-up. Avoiding sugary foods is also a good tactic, but we know it’s not always possible. It’s ok to indulge in treats, just be sure to brush soon after. Also, be sure to visit your dentist at least once every six months for a dental cleaning and oral examination.

Are you due to see us? Schedule your routine appointment to be sure you are cavity free!

Have you ever wondered what the most common dental issue that we and other dentists alike tend to treat?
